Steps

  1. Decide whether the image conveys information, acts as a control, or is only decoration.
  2. Use the alternative-text field where the current editor offers one, such as the theme logo settings. Keep the description concise and relevant to the question.
  3. For media without an available alt-text field, include the essential meaning in nearby readable text and choose an accessible alternative.
  4. Check the respondent experience with assistive technology before using a visually dependent task.

Check before you rely on it

“Image” or a filename rarely explains the content. Describe what the respondent needs to know without revealing the answer unintentionally.

If you need help

A caption and alternative text can serve different purposes. Do not assume every uploaded image receives a useful description automatically.

Contact support with the relevant screen, time, and a redacted description. Keep credentials and private respondent information out of screenshots.
